Neo4j 2.1.5
2+
=======================================
3+
4+
Welcome to Neo4j release 2.1.5, a high-performance graph database.
5+
This is the community distribution of Neo4j, including everything you need to
6+
start building applications that can model, persist and explore graph-like data.
7+
8+
In the box
9+
----------
10+
11+
Neo4j runs as a server application, exposing a Web-based management
12+
interface and RESTful endpoints for data access.
13+
14+
Here in the installation directory, you'll find:
15+
16+
* bin - scripts and other executables
17+
* conf - server configuration
18+
* data - database, log, and other variable files
19+
* lib - core libraries
20+
* plugins - user extensions
21+
* system - super-secret server stuff

24+
----------
25+
26+
For full instructions, see http://neo4j.com/docs/2.1.5/deployment/
27+
28+
To get started with Neo4j, let's start the server and take a
29+
look at the web interface ...
30+
31+
1. Open a console and navigate to the install directory.
32+
2. Start the server:
33+
* Windows: use bin\Neo4j.bat
34+
* Linux/Mac: use ./bin/neo4j console
35+
3. In a browser, open http://localhost:7474/
36+
4. From any REST client or browser, open http://localhost:7474/db/data
37+
in order to get a REST starting point, e.g.
38+
curl -v http://localhost:7474/db/data
39+
5. Shutdown the server by typing Ctrl-C in the console.

Important
16+
17+
This section describes upgrading a single Neo4j instance. Upgrading a Neo4j
18+
HA cluster (Neo4j Enterprise) requires a very specific process be followed.
19+
Please refer to ???.
20+
21+
A database created by an older version of Neo4j will be upgraded when opened by
22+
Neo4j 2.1.5 during startup. Whilst this upgrade will occur automatically for
23+
minor changes, larger migrations require explicit configuration before Neo4j
24+
will start.
25+
26+
Each Neo4j version supports upgrading from a limited number of previous
27+
versions. These upgrades are either automatic, or require explicit
28+
configuration to allow them.
29+
30+
In this release of Neo4j, the following upgrades are permitted.
31+
32+
1.9.x --> 2.1.5
33+
Explicit configuration is required
34+
35+
2.0.x --> 2.1.5
36+
Explicit configuration is required
37+
38+
2.1.x --> 2.1.5
39+
Automatically performs any store upgrade
40+
41+
42+
43+
Note
44+
45+
Downgrade is only supported between Neo4j versions that allow for automatic
46+
store upgrades. This typically means only within patch releases of the same
47+
Neo4j version.
48+
49+
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
50+
51+
52+
1. Automatic Store Upgrade
53+
54+
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
55+
56+
To perform a normal store upgrade (for minor changes to the database store):
57+
58+
1. Cleanly shut down the older version of Neo4j, if it is running.
59+
2. Install Neo4j 2.1.5, and set it up to use the same database store
60+
directory (typically data/graph.db).
61+
3. NOTE: It is strongly advised to make a copy of the database store
62+
directory at this time, to use as a backup in case rollback/downgrade is
63+
required. This is not necessary if a backup has been made using the
64+
online backup tool, available with Neo4j Enterprise.
65+
4. Start up Neo4j.
66+
5. Any database store upgrade required will occur during startup.
67+
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
68+
69+
70+
2. Explicit Store Upgrade
71+
72+
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
73+
74+
To perform an explicit store upgrade (required for significant changes to the
75+
database store):
76+
77+
1. Cleanly shut down the older version of Neo4j, if it is running.
78+
2. Install Neo4j 2.1.5, and set it up to use the same database store
79+
directory (typically data/graph.db).
80+
3. Set the Neo4j configuration parameter allow_store_upgrade=true in your
81+
conf/neo4j.properties file. Neo4j will fail to start without this
82+
configuration set.
83+
4. Start up Neo4j.
84+
5. The database store upgrade will occur during startup.
85+
6. The allow_store_upgrade configuration parameter should be removed, set to
86+
false or commented out.
87+
7. Information about the upgrade and a progress indicator are logged into
88+
the messages.log file, inside the database store directory.
89+
90+
91+
Caution
92+
93+
An explicit upgrade will require substantial free disk space, as it must
94+
make an entire copy of the database store. The upgraded store version may
95+
also require larger store files overall. It is suggested to have available
96+
free disk space equivalent to at least 1.5 times the size of the existing
97+
store.
98+
99+
100+
Note
101+
102+
Cypher compatibility: The Cypher language is rapidly evolving, and may
103+
change between Neo4j versions (although not between patch releases).
104+
However, Neo4j supports compatibility directives for Cypher, that allow
105+
explicitly selecting a language version. This is possible to do for
106+
individual statements, or globally, as described in the Cypher
107+
Compatibility section.
