Table is probably more confusing than necessary for most use cases #6

No need to bitch before contributing ;-) |
I'm not bitching, I'm trying to ascertain what you'd be open to! So, is that a confirmation that I should just tinker, send a pull request and go from there? |
To help this I have done this split a while ago. AFAIR its discussion on the mailinglist never reached any conclusion. What do others think about this? I think we do not attract new contributors by having the developement environment more prominently anyway so putting it one click away from the main page should not prevent anyone wanting to contribute to do so. |
Reopened this issue so we can discuss my change here. |
@hvoigt There are still some references to the table (which no longer exists), but all in all that’s much more user-friendly. Pretty much exactly what I was going for here. 👍 |
@geoffstokes please clarify. What do you mean with references to the table? The links section on the right side? I would like to keep it as shortcuts to the most important parts of the site. We might need to get rid of some links there though. Maybe shortened to this:
|
@geoffstokes just for the record, once and for all: you do not need me to tell you when you start working, and on what, ever. |
Every time I search for "git for windows" I reach this site, and find myself rather confused by the attempt to "sort out the confusion revolving around the naming scheme". I usually end up downloading both before realising that all I actually wanted was the "Git for Windows" installer.
I'd suggest that it'd be better to have the home page dedicated to Git for Windows (what most people will be looking for), and have info for people who want to assist the development of Git for Windows itself on a separate page with a link from the home page. The git-scm.com site does this pretty well - it's got fairly obvious separation of info for contributors and users.
I'd be happy to contribute to making this more user-friendly, but I thought it needed to be pointed out before I go making a pull request which attempts to dramatically change the home page. 😉
