Can I cross reference a figure from within a ggplot geom_text/geom_annotation layer?

Is it possible to reference [@fig-test1] from within a geom_text or annotate layer as part of a ggplot? Or are there any other nifty workarounds? In my field of research it is quiet common to have an overview figure and more detailed subsequent figures. 

I have tried using annotate, geom_text/label and the ggtext geom options. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

No, because the figure is statically generated before it has even knowledge of what is inside the document.

I'm pretty sure there is another discussion with this question (same answer I believe).

If you are not afraid of very deep waters and if you work with HTML mostly, you could try post-processing the figure as SVG and the produced HTML.
