How to reference an embedded figure (from a jupyter notebook) in qmd ?

Description

I have this cell in code.ipynb:

#| fig-cap: \label{fig-label-quad} Dummy function $y=x^2$
import numpy as np
from matplotlib import pyplot as plt

x = np.linspace(-10, 10, 1000)
plt.figure(figsize=(6,5))
plt.plot(x, x**2, "--")
plt.grid()
plt.show()

And I tried this to reference the embedded figure:

A reference to @fig-label-quad.

But it seems like dereferencing is done internally by quarto and not outsourced to latex (for pdfs) because I get this error: Unable to resolve crossref @fig-label-quad

I don't understand. There are nothing in your code that could be the target of fig-label-quad.
Why would you expect this to work if nothing matches this?

Why are you using raw LaTeX inside the caption?
I think you are completely missing the point of what the cross-reference system feature is. I suggest to read or read again that part of the documentation: https://quarto.org/docs/authoring/cross-references.html

I'm not sure what you mean by "There is nothing in your code that could be the target of fig-label-quad since the second line of the code is:
#| fig-cap: \label{fig-label-quad} Dummy function $y=x^2$

The reasoning behind this hack is that the generated intermediate latex file is:

\caption{\label{fig-label-quad} Dummy function $y=x^2$}

Which means that a ~\ref{fig-label-quad} would produce the correct reference.
But I understand that by bypassing quarto's internal cross-reference system, I make it unable to acknowledge the existance of this label, hence the warning message.

It's not a proposal, it's the documentation I've linked earlier about using Quarto cross-reference feature. It's as simple as that.

Ok, I see my mistake. I tried doing the same thing but I didn't use a name with the fig- prefix, hence my misunderstanding. Thanks !
