Unfortunately, there are many pieces missing and your screenshots lack context (they also don't have alternative text). Also be aware that you are running a fairly old version of Quarto 1.4.550 which is not even the latest 1.4 stable version. |

I'm using R version 4.4.1. I'll upgrade quarto to a more recent compatible version and try this again. Still, somewhat complicated LaTeX equations are very much part of my work. For simplicity, I'm rendering to HTML and I remain somewhat mystified about mathjax vs. other rendering methods. |

This is related to issue #10545 but different, as it doesn't relate to equation numbering or the things mentioned there.
In my document, I want to use ams
\begin{cases}
...\end{cases}
to show dummy coding of factors, with the following.I'm using

rather than an equation environment because this shows nicely in my editor window:I see onscreen what I want:
