Another squash for the git-based index?

I realize that the majority is probably not using the git index anymore, but for those of us stuck on e.g. 1.63 as the Rust version supported by Debian stable, checking out / updating the index is getting very tedious, since there are now about 125k commits. It is also devouring cycles on CI :)

If the infrastructure is still in place, can someone who knows how please start the process? Thanks!

the index was squashed yesterday morning and should now be down to a more manageable size again :)
