Display the number of words in the current document.

I'd rather have an estimation of how many minutes it takes to read the document. As it's a more of useful info. A word count is way to associated to word or libreoffice in my mind which we aren't trying to copy. Does that work for you @bzg ?

Reading time estimates are often just # of words * reading time (~200-250 words per minute).

I believe the OP (on Tchap) was asking for word count to be able to fit into certain limits ("Provide a 300 words summary of your talk").

I propose to keep the original proposal (display a simple word count) and to complement it with a reading time estimation based on (/ wc 200) (rounded).

In terms of UI, I suggest adding a line below the one with "Reader · Last update ..." in this screenshot:

The line would say "X words, X minute(s) to read."

I think having both would be very useful. Sometimes you need to make sure that what you're writing meets a max number of words limit (e.g. when filling an application form)

+1 on the fact that both are interesting: Editors want to see word count and readers want to see "time to read". So maybe word count could appear when you hover or click on "time to read" or something like that together with more statistics about your text?
