chore: rework base of the library

Reworks some of the structures that are used in the library. When trying to add the reader auth I noticed some weird inconsistencies within the current library and rather than adding another quirky class on top of it, I wanted to make it a bit more in-line with our own code guidelines and easier to develop on in the future.
