This fixed the build for me so I'm going to merge the revert. #6452 is open to track the effort to re-introduce the patch. |

I wanna see if this fixes our CI failures. An alternative fix was proposed to resolve what #6397 ventured out to achieve. See #6452 for discussion and more context.
